Joseph Jung, President

Joseph Jung has been an attorney at law in Oakland since 1997.  He has held the following posts at nonprofit organizations.  Vice President of Korean American Chamber of Commerce of San Francisco, Vice President of Korean American Community Center of San Francisco, Chairman of Board of East Bay Korean American Senior Services Center, President of San Francisco Korean American Lions Club.  He enjoys golf and basketball.  Married since 1997 and has one daughter and one son, and lives in Oakland.  www.jungandassociates.com
Sonja Brooks, Vice President

Sonja Brooks is a strategic consultant, speaker, trainer and small business advocate. She is has over 10 years’ experience in business, marketing, finance and real estate. She has been a KONO board member since 2013 and is the current board secretary. Sonja has served several boards including help position of president of Women's Council of Realtors, and  served as a managing director of a small business program under a nonprofit organization; and has been an active loan committee member for six years. She has has provided business and startup workshops for local artists and makers called the Green LEEF Artrepreneur project and launched the H-Cubed project on humor, health and happiness.

Getting Here
  • AC Transit bus lines 1, 1R and 800 provide local, rapid and overnight service.
  • The Koreatown Northgate District is conveniently located between two BART stations: 19th Street Oakland and MacArthur.
  • Use the Google Maps feature to the right for driving directions to the intersection of Telegraph Ave. and 30th Street. There is plenty of metered street parking available on Telegraph and side streets.

Katherin Canton, Advisory Board

Katherin Canton earned a Bachelors of Fine Arts from California College of the Arts (CCA), with an emphasis in Community Arts through a studio practice in photography and textiles. During her time at CCA, she become the administrator and Community Collaborations Director at the volunteer-run arts center Rock Paper Scissors Collective (RPSC). With RPSC she developed the funding, business and partnership processes that resulted in the program being awarded over $80K during her tenure. For the last decade she has also worked in Arts Education and Youth Development through Youth Art Exchange (formerly Out of Site), as a youth advisory board member, class and darkroom assistant, and teaching artist. Most recently as the Administrative Gallery Coordinator with Pro Arts, she was the lead on: membership/artist services, business/operations, event management, and volunteer/intern management. Affiliations include, the KONO (Koreatown Northgate) Community Benefit District, the Oakland Makers, and the Housing Rights Committee of San Francisco. Canton is currently the Network Coordinator with the Emerging Arts Professionals SF/BA and the Co-Organizer of the Oakland Creative Neighborhoods Coalition. She strives to be a resource/connector for the Bay Area arts community and is seeking to further develop the intersection of Creative/Cultural Expression and Urban Policy.

Alan Wilk
Born in San Jose, grew up in Fremont, went to school at UCSC studying economics, transferred to UC Berkeley to study Bioengineering and completed undergraduate degrees in both disciplines. Began working as a research associate in a sleep neurobiology lab running experiments and processing data. Altered fields slightly to do statistics for medical diagnostic devices. Currently works at a diagnostic device company in Redwood city. Permanent member of the KONO community since 2015.

Mike Thaler, Treasurer
Has lived and worked in Bay Area since 1970 and, as an owner, resided in the KONO district since 2009.
Is active in real estate and holds a broker's license.  
Attended KONO public board meetings for a couple years before becoming a member in March of 2015 
Presently serves as Treasurer of his HOA at 2407 Telegraph Ave.   
Interests include traveling the world, national politics, and urging neighborhood upgrades like the proposed protected bike lanes on Telegraph.

Andrew Slakey
Andrew Slakey is a licensed funeral director and embalmer who began his career in funeral service in 2005 and joined Grant Miller – John Cox Mortuary in 2011.
He moved from the Los Angeles area to San Francisco in 1994 and graduated from the University of San Francisco with a B.S. in Business Administration with an emphasis in Hospitality Management. He began a successful career in hospitality, working for The Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco before a series of life events led him to search for greater meaning in his professional life and eventually brought him to a second career in funeral service.
Andrew lives in Alameda with his husband and their golden retriever, “Parker”. He enjoys swimming with U.S. Masters at Laney College as well as travelling in the U.S. and abroad.
